The Dominican Republic is rapidly consolidating its position as the regional leader in the manufacturing of medical devices, and electrical and electronic products, attracting major global corporations, President Luis Abinader highlighted during his presentation to the nation on 17 November 2025.

Speaking during his weekly press engagement, “LA Semanal con la Prensa,” the head of state emphasized that the country’s strategic location near consumer markets, coupled with political, social, and macroeconomic stability, and a robust legal and fiscal incentive framework, are key drivers of this growth.

The medical device industry has become the country’s primary export sector. President Abinader noted that 42 companies are currently operating in national free trade zones dedicated to this field.

Export value: In 2024, medical equipment exports reached US$2.8...

The Central Bank reveals that remittance flows from abroad reached US$9.878.4 million between January and October 2025. There has been a substantial increase of US$966.8 million (10.8%) compared to the same period the previous year.

The robust performance strongly suggests the nation will easily surpass the estimated US$11.7 billion in remittances projected for the end of 2025.

In October alone, the country received US$965.6 million, a 5.8% (US$52.7 million) increase from October 2024. The BCRD highlighted that these funds, supplied by the Dominican diaspora abroad, have a significant multiplier effect on consumption, investment, and financing for the country’s most vulnerable sectors.

The Central Bank attributed the strong remittance behavior primarily to the economic performance of the United States. A staggering 80.4% of formal remittance flows in October, amounting to US$719.8 million...

The statutes of the National Police call for a maximum of two years in the position of director general. The current director, Major General Ramon Antonio Guzman Peralta was named in November 2023.

At the time, he replaced General Eduardo Alberto Then who had been named in November 2023 to the position. Previously, General Edward Sanchez, was named on 16 August 2020 and replaced on 17 October 2021.

Under the framework of Organic Law 590-16 of the National Police, Guzmán Peralta’s continued service at the helm of the institution is precarious. Article 23 of the law states that the director general can only occupy the position for a maximum period of two years.

“The designation of the director general of the National Police is made for a maximum period of two (2) years, without...

Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) deputy for La Romana, Jacqueline Fernández reportedly served divorce papers on her husband, Esteffani José (Ethian) Vásquez Amarante, shortly after it became public knowledge that he is wanted by the United States on drug trafficking charges. The move would distance herself from her spouse as he faces the possibility of extradition.

El Nuevo Diario explains that the ruling party legislator served divorce papers on the same day her husband was requested and arrested by the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) for the extradition hearing at the Supreme Court of Justice.

The judges of the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) are scheduled to hear a request for a pretrial coercion measure, specifically preventive custody, against Vásquez Amarante on Tuesday, 18 November 2025. US authorities are seeking his...

An October 2025 CUNY Latino Data Project Report indicates the Dominican population in New York City has declined by nearly 13% since 2021 as Dominicans migrate to other states.

In 1980 about 50% of all Dominicans living in New York City resided in Manhattan, mainly Washington Heights. Gradually, there was movement to the Bronx and in 2023, 48% of all Dominicans in the city lived in the Bronx and 22% in Manhattan.

The Dominican population in NYC decreased from approximately 761,333 in 2021 to 663,169 in 2024. Professor Bergad Laird of the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center analyzed census data for the recent Latin American report.

The study found that around 100,000 Dominicans left NYC for states like Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey, a move attributed to higher costs of living in New York City. People relocated to where living expenses are lower.

The study confirmed that the number of people immigrating from the...

President Luis Abinader has squarely attributed the Dominican Republic’s unprecedented success in tourism to “good policies” surrounding air connectivity, calling it a “decisive factor” in the nation’s international promotion.

Speaking at his weekly press meeting, LA Semanal con la Prensa from Punta Cana on 10 November 2025, Abinader underscored the inseparable link between air access and sustained growth in the sector. “You can do the greatest tourism promotion in the world, but if it is not accompanied by air connectivity, growth cannot be sustained,” he stressed.

Abinader was in Punta Cana to participate in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) World Air Services Negotiation Conference (ICAN 2025) in Punta Cana.

The much-awaited monorail system, Phase I, planned for the Dominican Republic’s second city, Santiago de los Caballeros, will not be tested this December 2025. Jhael Isa, head of the Trust for the Development of Mass Transit in the Dominican Republic (Fitram), made the announcement late last week.

This is due to a slight change in the path of the monorail system between a residential area and the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra. Initially, the rail system was going to border the residential area, but after negotiations with the university, the rail line will now pass through the western side of the Santiago campus of the PUCMM so as not to disturb the residential area.

With the cable car system already working, the arrival of the monorail should reduce the traffic situation in the central part of the town.

Full-scale trials are expected to be initiated...

The latest of some 89 nationwide blackouts over the past 37 years, which occurred last Tuesday, 11 November 2025 has brought a flurry of requests and demands for answers as to how it happened. The preliminary explanations have varied from “technical error” to “human error” to “we won’t know for two weeks.” There had not been a nationwide blackout since 2015.

According to Energy and Mining Minister Joel Santos, while some 65% of the investigations are complete, the government will need two weeks to prepare the final report.

Members of the coordinating committee for the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) told reporters that the companies that produce electricity are cooperating fully with the investigation to pinpoint the precise cause of the nationwide event. They noted that simplistic explanations will not satisfy the requirements of the investigation, but...

The Dominican Republic has achieved a major international distinction by becoming the first Caribbean nation to have its proposal accepted by the LEAF Coalition to supply high-integrity jurisdictional emissions reductions and removals. This milestone was announced at the Cop30 platform in Belem, Brazil.

The acceptance by the LEAF Coalition, a premier public-private buyers’ group for high-integrity carbon credits, offers the Dominican Republic several key benefits and opportunities:

• Pioneering Status: The DR is now the first in the Caribbean to gain access to this high-integrity carbon credit market, positioning it as a climate leader in the region.• Green Financing Attraction: Crucially, this acceptance will allow the country to attract green financing for projects. The purchase of credible carbon credits by the LEAF Coalition will help fund efforts to reduce...

The International Monetary Fund was questioned by the staff of the Listin Diario newspaper regarding aspects of the Dominican economic situation, which is currently showing a slow-down in its GDP growth, and what is called “effervescence” in remittances this year.

The IMF focused its reply of the necessary changes that needed to be implemented, such as a stronger push for improving what is called the “human capital” or the labor force, in order to improve competitiveness of the Dominican Republic’s industries.

This, of course, requires education that is in line with the needs of industry today and in the future. This pushes the National Technical Professional Institute (INFOTEP) to the forefront of the process together with the nation’s Polytech high schools. A better trained work force and an increase in productivity will provide a strong incentive to...

The Dominican Agro-business Board (JAD) and the Ministry of Agriculture have joined forces to promote the cultivation, processing and sale of “Buen Pan” or breadfruit in the Dominican Republic. A judge on the Second Chamber of Instruction in La Romana has handed down the first sentence for the sale of seized properties involved in the case of a network of electronic fraud and money laundering that was dismantled during Operation Cheetah.

Judge Vicky Chalas decided to accept the request made by the prosecutors to sell the assets seized from the different companies involved in the massive real estate fraud. These assets include properties, office equipment, machinery, cement, re-bar, and other materials used in construction.

The stated objective of the advance sale is to avoid the assets becoming damaged during the trial process.

The magistrate said that the funds obtained from the sale of the items and the properties would go into an account, controlled by the State, that could be used to repay the victims of the fraud once a court has ordered the final and definitive...

The date was set by Judge Raymundo Mejía of the First Investigating Court of the National District, just one week after the Public Ministry formally filed an indictment.

The hundreds of red, white, and blue flags in the ballpark were not those of the United States, but those of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, brought to the park by fans at the RD/DR Showdown, the All-Star Game between teams from the Dominican Republic’s Lidom Baseball League and Puerto Rico’s Liga Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente.

The Dominican All-Stars won 6-2 over the Puerto Rican Stars. But more than a sports competition, the event was the celebration of the heritage and culture of two of the Caribbean’s baseball powers, as well as the cultural contributions the large Dominican and Puerto Rican populations have made to New York City.

The game, which drew 20,057 to Citi Field, also honored two players who made their own marks in New York: the DR’s Robinson Cano, who is in what is likely his final season of winter ball with the Estrellas...

The nationwide blackout the Dominican Republic suffered as of the afternoon of Tuesday, 11 November 2025, highlights the importance of alternate power systems. The Dominican Republic is one of the most resilient to power outages because past frequent blackouts resulted in the generalized practice of businesses installing backup systems.

On Tuesday, 11 November 2025 at 1:23pm, the national power grid suffered a massive blackout caused by a malfunction at the 138/69 kV SPMI–138 kV SPM-Cumayasa substation. The failure occurred during the manual opening of the 138 kV line switches connecting San Pedro de Macorís and Cumayasa, triggering a chain reaction that led to a nationwide power outage. Power was fully restored by 2:30am on Wednesday, 12 November, but was out for most of the country all throughout the afternoon of that Tuesday.

The blackout paralyzed mass transportation...

An unusual massive, nationwide power outage crippled the Dominican Republic, leaving vast swathes of the country without electricity for most of the afternoon of Tuesday, 11 November 2025. The blackout obliged millions to turn on their back up power and spend billions on fuel for several hours.
